Central Series Race 3
10 GoodGymers made their way 5km to help their local community in Hackney.
- Wednesday, 11th of September 2013
The atmosphere was different for Race 3 of the central series. Autumn had descended and there was a chill in the air as the runners assembled in the basement of Somerset House for the final installment of this series of 5k Races with Makerversity and Runners Need.
The previous team had painted an impressive 411 ceiling tiles in 45 minutes. Perhaps the drizzle and darkness had put people off, but a hard-core of 10 runners attempted to beat that record. We had a only 320 tiles to go, could we get them all done?
Mark briefed everyone on the ins and outs of tile painting and Tom described the exciting plans for an underground world of making in central London, and we were off. Paint was flying as three teams comped through the tile scraping and painting beating last week's average of 0.513 tiles per person per minutes (pppm) and achieving 285 tiles in 45 minutes - an impressive rate of 0.63 tiles pppm.
As start time time beckoned darkness had fallen and a slippery damp had decended. This had the advantage of clearing the route of tourists, but causing a loss of traction on the limestone flagstones of the embankment.
Group one setoff a a nice pace, and three minutes later the full field were away - disappearing into the night.
The nasty conditions didn't stop some impressive times: Andrew came across the line first with a tidy 22.05 and Hannah was just behind with 23.27. Shout outs due to Damien for hitting his PB after injury and to Aimee for squeezing in under 25mins. Also nice one Abeid for taking the slightly longer route having absolutely hammered the first leg over Westminster Bridge.
