Weed it and reap

Sunday 21st July

Written by Jana

This summer has seen an explosion of greenery thanks to the generous rains, but with it came an army of relentless weeds! Today’s mission? Tackle two residents gardens that seemed to have been claimed by these pesky invaders.

Our dynamic duo, Emily and Jana, armed with the finest tools generously lent by the ever-helpful resident, Dave, sprang into action. The sun was shining when they started, yet they attacked the weeds with vigor, channeling their inner garden warriors.

Some weeds were merely surface troublemakers, but others? They had roots so deep, it felt like they were trying to reach the other side of the world! Emily and Jana dug deep, literally and figuratively, to uproot every last one of them. The battle was fierce, but their spirits remained high.

Time whizzed by in a blur of green and brown as the two worked tirelessly. Before they knew it, both gardens were transformed into weed-free sanctuaries, at least until the inevitable return of their foes. For now, Emily and Jana can rest, knowing they’ve won this round of the never-ending garden wars.

Until next time, weeds. Until next time.

Garden of weedin

Saturday 29th June

Written by Jana

Todays task was to weed two residents overgrown gardens and we were lucky to have the weather on our side again. Emily & Jana got quick to work and cleared the first garden in good time. We managed to fill a huge bag with the weeds! A kind resident offered us a thirst quenching cuppa and a chat. We then started on the second garden which was so overgrown there was no soil to be seen! Emily, Jana and Saber got to work removing the deep rooted weeds and cutting back Holly branches. We were accompanied by the resident of the garden who helped direct us and share a little about his life. We also had a friendly Robin by our side and a mouse! Before we knew it our time was up and we cleared the whole of the second garden. The resident was very pleased he could see the soil again! Emily & Saber dragged the very large bag of weeds to the front of the flats and we waved goodbye to the residents hoping to see them again next month.

You’re unbe-weed-able

Saturday 25th May

Written by Jana

We were greeted by the sun and residents on arrival to our task at the peaceful communal garden of a sheltered living accomodation. The residents flats look out onto the garden which have been neglected over recent times.

Most of the residents are unable to maintain the garden due to their physical and medical limitations.

Our team today were Saber, Rachel & Mel who were ready to tackle the task of clearing the flower beds at the lower end of the garden. An initial stumbling block was that the shed with gardening tools in was locked as the resident had forgotten to open it for us! A little creative thinking led us to another kind resident who had a cupboard full of tools she kindly lent us.

Saber got to work removing ivy and Rachel tackled the weeds and dead plants. Mel worked towards the back of the bed to pull out more weeds. 2 hours later we'd cleared a 6m area and the roses and plants can now be enjoyed by the residents! Rachel & Saber used their super strength to drag a huge bag of weeds to the front of the building for collection. Mission complete. Residents thanked us with cookies and a jigsaw puzzle for Mel. We hope to return on a monthly basis. Great work team!

A good weed for the day

Saturday 27th April

Written by Jana

On arrival, we were greeted warmly by the residents. We were shown the gardening tasks and the selection of gardening tools that a resident had left for us to use. This was Sandra's first task and she got stuck in straight away! Sandra was very knowledgeable about plants and helped us to identify the plants in the flower bed. Emily worked hard to dig up the grass that had grown over the flowerbeds alongside Sandra and myself. We couldn't believe how much we dug up and filled a huge bag that at the end required us to test our boot camp skills and dragged it to the front of the building! We all welcomed a thirst quenching cuppa offered to us by a very lovely resident! We hope to return soon as there's still much to do.
