A Tiny Forest is a dense and rapidly growing native woodland in a small area. It will provide a protected habitat for wildlife, capture carbon, filter the air of harmful particulates and reduce flooding and soil loss.
Besides these important local effects, it is symbolic of our need to protect our wider environment and it is hoped it will provide an education and emotional engagement of our community. It’s also something that we will have to physically nurture as a group. Its a great fit for Goodgym!
These initiatives are gaining popularity across the UK, with organisations like EarthWatch and The Conservation Volunteers getting involved.
If you have ideas about how to promote this planting to the community please also get in touch. We want schools, community groups, artisans, news media and others to get involved.
Thanks to Daniel Mermelstein for introducing the idea to Goodgym Barnet.

2. Get involved with tree keeping ( on going care)
As you know, we're gearing up to plant a Tiny Forest near Mutton Brook (https://what3words.com/went.give.torn) on February 24th. That will be 600 trees!
But after we're done on the day, the Tiny Forest will need lots of TLC. That is what Tree Keepers are for!
Earthwatch has put together the attached flier about what being a Tree Keeper entails (basically a bit of litter picking, weeding and taking measurements for scientific research, among other fun things to keep you out and about!) and why it is such an important role.
Hopefully some of you will be interested in joining us as tree keepers of the Tiny Forest at Mutton Brook.
If you think this is of interest, Earthwarch are also organising an introductory webinar about it next week. It is open to all.

Thank you for signing up to support a tiny Forest in Barnet. Your enthusiasm to signup was an important motivation for getting the council to engage with the idea .One of the most environmentally friendly things you can do in your own backyard. After over a year it will finally happen, unfortunately it is on a weekday, when most people will struggle to attend. If there is any chance you can attend it is tomorrow please see link to sign up. https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/tiny-forest-tree-planting-confirmed
If you want to come and see it we will be visiting in the evening for a group run please see a link.

Thanks for continuing your interest in tiny forest Barnet. We like to think that the Tiny Forest is not just about the planting but the engagement in the local community. A great legacy and a science project about planting forests. With this in mind Earthwatch scientists are returning to answer questions and show us how to take measurements for national comparisons. Save the 29th of June if you can. I hope you can try and join us as it’s possible your Employer I will give you time off for community and charitable projects. Please sign up if you hope to come.
Next event science day on the 29th of June. Please sign up here https://www.goodgym.org/happenings/meet-the-wildlife-at-barnet-tiny-forest.
Urgent watering is required during this heat wave to give the forest a chance. Join us tonight or whenever you get an opportunity. It’s a two minute walk with a bucket!
