25 people took one look at the torrential rain in London and Wednesday and said "Stick it you! I'm running anyway" and made their way down to Somers Town. They were rewarded with bright sunshine, the smell of compost in their nostrils and a lung busting 400m workout.

Compost turning.

We ran to Granary Square to help the Skip Garden, a project run by sustainability charity Global Generation. Read more about the Skip Garden here. The young volunteers who help manage the project aren't very keen on turning the giant compost machine used to churn foodwaste and wood chippings into lovely smelly compost. It's hard, it stinks, and its laborious. The perfect task for us!

We split into small groups of 6 led by overseer Pritesh who timed each person for a hardcore 45 second twist on the machine. Check the photos out for some great gurns! While one group churned the others ran, swapping over at regular intervals. With 25 people we made light work of it - smashing out a massive 4 buckets of delicious 'composty' goodness. Apparently the machine hadn't been turned for some time .... our burning nostrils can bear testament to that!

Those not turning were blasting their way round a traffic free 400m course, with some running as many as 8 repetitions with a short rest in between each. We all tried to slowly increase the pace as we went, shifting through the gears before an all out blast on the last 2 reps. Everyone ran brilliantly, slowly getting faster despite their increasingly tired legs. We got in the hurt box and threw away the key.

Post run nutrition

On the way out of the Skip Garden we were presented with the cafe leftovers, some delicious quiche and falafels Cooor delicious. I ate so many I was fala-full*
