A few days ago, Sam got a call out from Elmington Community Garden via Instagram to come and assist them with tree planting as they had to plant 225 tree whips!
On the day, Sam and Claire from GoodGym as well as the Elmington Community Garden volunteers and those who signed up via "Meet Up" came together on a windy Sunday morning. Despite the wind, the weather just about held up. Sam and Claire were put on different tasks. Claire to shoveled woodchip mulch into a tonne bag to transport to mulch growing trees whilst Sam dug and planted a variety of tree whips - Hazel and Willow to name two - in the Wildlife Triangle. They finally came together for the final task, which was to plant the remaining trees left in the "dog poo" area.
It was much easier to dig and plant over a dozen tree whips in the Wildlife Triangle before putting down mulch compared to the "dog poo" area, where the soil was fine for about....10 centimetres before we hit rumble and stone. We dug down as much as we could before planting the saplings without compacting their roots.
The afternoon brought more rain, so hopefully the trees will have enough water and nutrients to grow! We look forward to seeing their progress over the months and years! Both Claire and Sam cannot wait to go back and help develop the Wildlife corridor that Elmington Community Garden envisions for the area.
P.s. Super proud of the pun for the title.....nailed it - mixture of what we were doing (planting tree whips) and the name of the estate..."Elmington"!
