Quite literally a tale of two halves tonight at Goodgym Bath for 10 runners not lucky enough to be on holiday but keen enough to risk a shower or two for 5k run around the city for two great causes.

Special mention tonight before group run to our very own Alison Davidson who took 2nd place on the overall Heros board for distance ran in July 261 kilometres...well done that girl👏👏👏

Task One

To paint a small meeting room for focus counselling group in the vaults of St Michael's Church.

Task Two

Tackling stinging nettles at Park street community garden

We set off as one group for the run out and a core workout in the Southgate centre, causing a distraction for the passing public Going about their business. A few grunts and groans from my eager group but they're not kidding me I know they love every second.

Pascale took the Fab Four, that being herself, Emma,Rob and Oli into the depths of the church to give the small counselling room a fresh coat of emulsion.

Boy it was Hot down there

They managed to first coat the tight space and did a sterling job in such hot cramped conditions, plus they had to keep quiet as a meeting was being held in the room next door.

Steph took the remaining 6 up a slightly hilly route to Park street community garden in need of some weeding. Lots of stinging nettles to pull out and take to the composting bin but thankfully the Rose bush was left to bloom.

Both teams did a sterling job tonight in 30 minutes before gather his back as one on the way back to the leisure centre.

Finally Mention to Robert who will be taking on s very charitable challenge with his brother next month, so check this out and show your support:

In September, my brother and I will be embarking on an adventure and taking on Africa’s biggest hill (the mighty Kilimanjaro)! We also wanted to make a contribution to a charity supporting communities in sub-Saharan Africa, including countries we will be visiting! The trip is already paid for and completely self-funded and therefore any donations will go directly to our chosen charity.

The work done by charities that provide key resources and support in the fight against preventable diseases is essential. Therefore, we will be supporting Against Malaria Foundation, who ‘fund anti-malaria nets, specifically long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), and work with distribution partners to ensure they are used’ (https://www.againstmalaria.com/WhyMalaria.aspx).

We made this decision for two main reasons;

1) Malaria kills half a million people every year and 400 million fall ill. Before bed nets were made available, it was three or more times that. Nets are a proven intervention - a more effective a way of saving lives than any other.

2) Against Malaria Foundation is one of the most COST-EFFECTIVE and HIGH-IMPACT charities, featuring at the top of many metacharities that evaluate the 1) effectiveness, 2) cost-effectiveness, 3) transparency, and 4) room for more funding, of your donations.

1) http://www.givewell.org/charities/top-charities

2) https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/top-charities/

Put simply, any donations made to Against Malaria Foundation will make a BIG DIFFERENCE to communities in Africa. For example, even a small donation of just £2.50 will purchase an insecticide treated bed net, which will lasts for 3-4 years, and protects, on average, two people.
