The seasons are changing and summer activities are giving way to the return of autumn favourites. And so it was that on Sunday morning Good Gym, including the amazing Sian who'd made her way all the way from Tower Hamlets, found itself back at Lochaber Hall to help the All Aboard club, a wonderful organisation that provides an environment for children with special educational needs, ADHD and autism to play.
As ever we were met by organiser Richard who put us to work. There was one main job: use our imaginations to assemble a giant train set layout for the kids to play with. After an hour, we'd transformed an empty hall into a giant train network and as the kids started to turn up to play we took our leave.
This is a genuinely lovely task and is now going to be back on a monthly basis so why not put your engineers hat and join us for a future session.

What do you call a locomotive that keeps sneezing? Achoo choo train!
On a beautiful sunny morning, one GoodGym-er arrived at Lochaber Hall Community Centre to help the All Aboard Club. This is a brilliant organisation that run play sessions for children with autism and ADHD to help boost their confidence, reduce anxiety and share their interests with other children in a safe, supportive and understanding environment.
Alongside several other volunteers, the task was to set up a huge train set for the children to play with, with the only design requirement being that it all joined up in the end! After an hour of building tracks, bridges, tunnels and stations our masterpiece was complete, and the smiles on the faces of the children as they arrived made it clear that we had done a good job!

Slightly rained on and 10 minutes early, that's how 2 GoodGymers found themselves at the start of this mission. We didn't stay like that for long though, with blue skies and fellow volunteers gradually making an appearance. And just as the hour turned up, so did the task owner with a car full of boxes.
Boxes quickly unloaded, it was time to start the big build. Now, the GG pair hadn't done this for a while, but it was a case of repeating old movements - track after track, under well orchestrated hands, a symphony of curves, connections, bridges and underpasses emerged. One GGer even managed to create his own little eternal loop, where trains never reach the end of the line. How many trains ended up there at the end of the playing session is anyone's guess.

Four goodgymers (including a traveling goodgymer from Bristol – Welcome!) made their way over to All Hallows church hall to help out with a great charity (the All Aboard Club). Today’s task was to create the biggest most complex train track we could – one that Thomas the Tank engine and friends would be jealous of!!
Once we were given the green signal we all cracked on creating as complex a track as we possibly good. There were bridges, junctions, curves and bends – it was amazing. It was so complicated it was literally overload – I mean “Train comes I don't know its destination. It's a one-way ticket to a madman's situation”. Such a great task though. Lots of smiles on the kids as they arrived and started sending the trains around our track. Shinkansen’s making their way around, InterCitys making their way along the west coast hall-line – and poor Billy with 8 carriages slugging his way around! Poor guy! Still, the kids loved it and it was great to see them taking full advantage of the track.
Great task. Looking forward to the next one with this charity.

They say that the only things certain in life are death and taxes but this author would add late trains to that, And today, reality met play as the All Aboard club, organisers of the monthly giant train set build for autistic and ADHD children, were nowhere to be seen at the appointed start time as they were delayed (it wasn't clear whether this was for leaves on the line, the wrong kind of snow or (this author's favourite) following a train that was in front of them). So when the team did arrive the hour set up time was reduced to a mere 40 minutes and now we had to work fast. Fortunately the volunteers are now all experts and before we knew it an extensive track layout had been laid down just in time for the kids to turn up.

We helped set up a giant train set as part of a community event summer party. Two GoodGym members joined some other community helpers. All went smoothly!
