Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Our Goodgym crew caught up for our 3rd trip to St Mungo's Hilldrop House on a blustery Spring time evening. Area Activator Simon ran with Adam and Kim (who celebrated her 50th good deed this evening- congratulations!) from the Emirates Stadium, and up Pankhurst Road towards the Hilldrop Estate.
Upon our arrival, we met with the residential homeless resource centre help team, and were offered a variety of tools (clippers, brooms, green waste bags and secateurs) to help with our garden maintenance tasks. Between us, we endeavoured to make the main entrance pathway to the centre as welcoming tidy as possible for future clients. We clipped away the messy brambles around the edges of the paths, and snipped through swathes of overgrown grass from the beds. A real transformation throughout the course of the evening. Well done everyone!

Adam has already done 25 good deeds with GoodGym. Instead of doing anything else, they've used their run to go and help people that need their help; digging, lifting, scraping, clearing, planting and weeding. Stuff that makes this a better place to be.

Half term holidays are upon us, and so is our regular visit to the wonderful Elizabeth House Food Hub! 3 Goodgym Runners joined Area Activator Simon for a dynamic warm up and a pleasant chatty run up Highbury Hill and over towards the former Arsenal stadium grounds.
We were met by Roshni, a superstar at the Food Hub, who offered our team a collection of addresses to deliver to, along with carefully prepared essentials and supplies for local families and vulnerable individuals in the community. We also caught with our cycling and run commuting crew, leaving us with 7 food hub delivery volunteers from Goodgym this evening! Alongside the regular supplies, we were offered the opportunity to include special Burns Night Meals (donated from the Caledonian Sleeper Train- full neeps, tatties and haggis), heads of lettuce and additional loaves of bread (from local supermarkets) where possible.
Our team made short work of the deliveries and helped out with moving all valuable leftover food back into the kitchen and pantry areas of the centre before setting off on our return trip to the Emirates Stadium. Since we were encouraged to take as much food as possible (reducing waste where we can), Louise, Caitlin and Simon adopted a run/walk strategy up and down the Islington slopes to make our supplies survived the trip! Thanks to Adam and Mehmet for the cycle support!
Next week we will be visiting the Thornhill Square Gardens for a special bulb planting and Springtime preparation task.

On an absolutely Baltic evening (2 degrees and threatening to snow!), 5 intrepid Goodgymmers met at the Arsenal Community Hub for Goodgym Islington's annual Christmas tree pick-up task! We began with a dynamic warm up on the Emirates Stadium slopes (much appreciated considering the weather!) before heading towards Whistler Street, and onwards towards Highbury Fields. Area Activator Simon even found a tree on route, and scaled a solid ascent and descent before dropping it off at the designated Islington council drop point outside the Highbury Leisure Centre.
Perhaps he was training for our next Goodgym Race Team: Met League Cross Country Fixture in Welwyn Garden City on Saturday 13th January?
Upon our arrival, we split up into two groups- team 1 (Alison and Byron) headed to the North of the park, while team 2 (Paul and Adam) ran South, on the search of discarded Christmas trees. Within 20 minutes, we were able to drop off 5 trees from the surrounding area, ready to be recycled!
For the last part of our session, we decided to run to Paradise Park, by Freightliner's Farm to try a new area for Xmas tree pick-ups. This proved to be a great idea, as we found a Massive Christmas Tree in a church yard on route, and proceeded in directing this tree down McKenzie Road! Great job team! 4 more trees were discovered while we were making our way over, bringing our number to 10 recycled Xmas Trees on a very cold Monday evening. Wonderful work all!

Area Activator Simon met up with a bumper team of 11 Goodgymmers at Arsenal Community Hub last night (including first timers Daniel and Maggie- welcome to you both!). After a full dynamic warm up on the Emirates Stadium slopes, we ran together (with Adam following us on his bike) over to the wonderful Thornhill Square Gardens (about 1.4 miles total, along Mackenzie Road).
After distributing head torches and gardening gloves, we met up with Anna, one of the residential gardening champions of Thornhill Square. Our task for the evening was to dig up an abundance of holes within the rose bushes of this public green space with forks, spades and hand trowels. Once an 8 inch hole had been dug, we would fill the holes with about10 new narcissus bulbs each.
Daniel and Louise took it in turns to bring wood chip to to spread across these newly cultivated beds, to keep these little bulbs safe from wandering dogs and hungry birds over the Winter months. Sarah and Patricia did a smashing job of preparing their own gardening spot, around a dead head fence created during one of our previous Goodgym Islington group runs earlier this year!
After about 40 minutes of digging, planting, wheel barrowing and bark spreading, we packed up out tools back in the community shed in the centre of the park, and bode Anna farewell until next time. Hopefully we can return to see our bulbs growing in Spring! We completed our session with a trip to The Swimmer, at The Grafton Arms for our November social, enjoying refreshments and delicious food on a gorgeous autumnal evening. Well done everyone!
