Debbie Cross done a 12 month mission streak.

Wow, Debbie has completed a 12 month mission streak. That means they've cleared gardens, moved furniture and changed light bulbs in spring, summer, autumn and even winter. Show your support and give them a massive cheer!

Our friendship was on the (washing) line

Newcastle Report written by Debbie Cross

1 Goodgymer cycled 11 km to help a friend install her washing line.

It was a wall-mounted rotary washing line. I learned the benefit of the hammer drill. There were no accidents, incidents or missiles leading to visual impairment.

I was very pleased with the assembly and affixing of the washing line. We did well. I was not at all happy with the finishing photo. I had no idea my neck is so long. How unsightly.

Your children are less hairy and not as barky as my dog

Newcastle Report written by Debbie Cross

1 Goodgymer walked 2 km to babysit 2 children.

I have no children so do not know much about looking after them. However, I have a 3.5 year-old golden retriever and some experience of resuscitation and stabilisation of patients aged 0 - 18 years, including advanced airway management, extracorporeal mechanical support and ultrasound-guided central venous access.

It was all quite straightforward and nothing bad happened. There were the same number of children at the end of the afternoon as the start and we had made some good progress on the colouring book.

Upon her return, their mother agreed this was a success.

Another shaggy dog story

Newcastle Report written by Debbie Cross

1 goodgymer walked 9 km to exercise a friend’s dog. He (the dog not the friend) is smaller and woollier than my own but we seemed to manage okay.

Spin-sweep-squat

Newcastle Report written by Debbie Cross

To get to my spinning class I had to wade through a lot of rubbish in the back lane. I returned with my litter picker, gloves, bin bags and trusty companion to sort out that mess. I finished it with a nice squat session to burn out those thighs.

I’m not saying we walked so fast you didn’t see us, but the milk was pasteurised before we got there.

Newcastle Report written by Debbie Cross

Statistical breakdown: Total walking legs = 6 Average number of legs per walker = 3 Average milk allowance per family member = 400 ml Millilitres of milk:metres walked ratio = 1:1

That's a lot of legs to deliver two litres of milk - but I'd never say that the presence of a dog on a mission is an overkill!

Rubbish dog walk

Newcastle Report written by Debbie Cross

Combined dog walk/litter picking. Pilot session.

Equipment: Litter picker, bin bag, dog, self

Initial disappointment from dog that the litter picker was not a ball thrower. Not as littery as expected but half-filled a binbag. 3.64 km walk. Now relaxing with a glass of orange squash and a Bonio.

Bag it up, pack it in, let’s put it in the bin

Newcastle Report written by Removed User (she/her)

Tonight we helped out at the West End Refugee service which relies on volunteers to help it run.

A huge congratulations to Sabrina on her first ever GoodGym good deed tonight and first Community Mission. Also a massive well done to Sam for achieving her 25th good deed tonight. Go and give them both a cheer!

Sabrina arrived first, followed by Sam and Tom, then Debbie and Abbi on their bikes (extra kudos to Abbi who had some trouble with her bike but made it there!)

We were met by Hazel, who gave us a brief introduction, had everything so well organised and clearly explained the task.

The service has struggled over lockdown with a lack of volunteers. We were shown to an outdoor cupboard which was piled high with donations.

There was bags of donated clothing, bedding and a whole range of other items which desperately needed sorting.

We soon got stuck in sorting through the donations and putting them into different piles, then bagging/labelling them up.

Unfortunately some of the items had to be binned as they were damp/unsuitable to be donated.

We managed to clear a large amount from the cupboard, which was then neatly stored in the large garage next door.

There is still a lot more to do, but Hazel thanked us for our efforts. We look forward to returning next Wednesday!
