Back at Highbury Quadrant to cultivate this lovely community garden space

Mon 26th Jan at 7:15pm
Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
On a pleasantly bright Monday evening (the Spring is coming!), Area Activator Simon met with Matt and first timer Juliane for a classic Goodgym community session in Thornhill Square Gardens. Resident gardening expert Anna was present and ready to meet our crew, and we fetched wheelbarrows, spades and forks from the community tool shed for our task.
Tree surgeons around the Islington borough were nice enough to donate 3 large mounds of wood chippings to the gardens, and our objective was to move and spread as much on plant beds as possible within an hour. Between the three of us, we did a smashing job covering the majority of the East side of the park, offering protection for new bulbs over the Winter months.
Well done everyone! See you next week for our group run session at Highbury Quadrant Estate gardens!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Area Activator Simon, Alice and Matt met up with local resident gardener Barry at the lovely Maria's Garden project on the Isledon Estate. Despite the threat of rain, our crew arrived to take on an ambitious shed construction challenge at one of our regular group run locations.
First task involved bringing the components together from a safe storage space (just past a lovely neighbourhood cat house, with a fluffy Maine Coon watching us from a distance!). Once we brought the pieces together, we began our flat pack assembly project. Alice and Matt did a great job of setting the panels in place, while Simon screwed at least a hundred screws into position. Amazingly, the shed came together, and felt strong and sturdy!
Together, we moved the new shed on top of some new foundations at the bottom of the gardens (while traversing a tricky pond!), and had the satisfaction of putting all of our tools away in something we had just constructed! Well done everyone!!!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
Area Activator Simon met with 4 Goodgymmers (Stephane, Damarcus, Deidre and Louie) at the Arsenal Community Hub last night, ready for a nice run up Camden Road over to Rowstock Gardens (aka Camden Estate Gardens). Our crew did a smashing job running up the slopes (after a dynamic warm up), and we caught up with the rest of the team in good and ample time.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Michelle (the resident coordinator for these community plots), who set us our objectives for the evening. The first task involved snipping down long bamboo shoots using loppers and secateurs, separating the stalks and the branches for gardening canes, composting or dead hedging projects. We then swept up and tidied the space before moving to the next spot.
We then helped to move some rubber slip matting over to the newly swept up areas of the gardens. The plan is to make the space as safe and welcoming as possible for local gardeners to start planting over Spring. Keep an eye out for many more Camden Estate Garden projects in the near future!
Congratulations on a successful evening of Goodgym activities, all!
And a special mention to Goodgym legend Alison, who joined our group for one last time as a London resident. We wish you all the best with the move up North, and Thank You for all of your help and enthusiasm over the years!

Islington Report written by Simon Fitzmaurice
On a slightly rainy Monday evening, Area Activator Simon met with early Goodgym arrival Steph Ducat at The ARC Centre, Islington. Stephane told me that he had passed through the area for another mission just the other day, and was happy to join us for our riverside plogging session that evening. As the rest of our crew gathered up, we took our our hardy gloves, litter pickers, head torches and bin bags ready for our brisk walk, along with small bags of bird seed for feeding the local water fowl on Regent's Canal. The birds have had a hard time recently, especially with the icy conditions and frozen water!
Within 50 minutes, we had walked together through the Riverside Gardens (on the Packington Estate) and along the canal side to De Beauvoir, Shoreditch, collecting loads of rubbish and debris on route. Almost 7 full bags of rubbish had been gathered from the parks and the towpath. Well done everyone!
