Trigger Happy

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

What a great bunch of trig point baggers!

Between us we found a total of ten trigs over the last week. Some were relatively urban and others decidely wilder, requiring a little bit of adventuring!

Well done, Kati Law, Louise Luna Galvin, Sallyann Maish, Clare Smith and Ben Godfrey.

Step Counters

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

Well, we have certainly proved there are plenty of steps in Kirklees!

A great effort from all the GoodGymmers (and dogs) who spent the week searching for and running up steps during their daily exercise sessions. The longest set we found were on Kilner Bank, some 204 in total.

I think there is actually an even longer set in the area, but these will need to wait for Step Challlenge 2!

Challenging Behaviour

Huddersfield Report written by Saul Muldoon

Well done to everyone who took part in today’s Photo Challenge, I hope you have all enjoyed running and competing as much as I have planning and administrating.

The event generated some very impressive sets of results, with no less than three individual/teams achieving a “full house” and scoring the maximum 250 points. This means the final result will come down to whoever managed to run round, take their photos and get back home the quickest.

So in reverse order today’s top three are as follows...

Our third place are a team and veterans of various other Photo Challenge events, although I think this is the first time they have done one on foot as opposed to two wheels. Well done to Team Smith, comprising Evie and Clare Smith, a great effort guys, 250 points in 1 hour 25 minutes.

Second place goes to someone who very effectively navigated her way around Marsh and Lindley to photograph all the items on the list, but did have the good fortune to have a post box virtually on her doorstep! Congratulations SallyAnn Masih who scored her 250 points in 1 hour 18 minutes.

But today’s winner was just a little bit quicker. Running around hilly Holmfirth snapping her shots and racking up 250 points in a time of just 1 hour 10 minutes. She also proved that being a vegan makes you run faster! Well done Louise Luna Galvin, an excellent performance to take the GoodGym Huddersfield Photo Challenge Champion title.

Thanks again to all who took part, if you enjoyed today’s offering keep your eye for other GoodGym Huddersfield Lockdown Challenges coming soon.

‘Cherry Aid 🍒 ‘

Huddersfield Report written by Kati Law

A few weeks ago, while out dog walking, I found some patches of woodland full of litter not far from Greenhead Park, the home of Huddersfield parkrun. I knew that Huddersfield GoodGymmers love a good litter pick so planned a Community Mission to address the squalor in the woods after parkrun. To appeal to everyone’s competitive nature I set the team a set of challenges in the style of a scavenger hut. Today’s GoodGymmers needed to find a KitKat wrapper, some Christmas related rubbish, anything cherry flavoured and something with packaging in a foreign language. As we came out of the park we delivered a few flyers (left over from Tuesday’s group run) promoting Forget-Me-Not Children’s Hospice’s charity Christmas tree collection. Then it was into the woods and on with the litter collection. SallyAnn was the first to find an item on our list, some gift ribbon. There was some debate about whether this was Christmas related but she put up a good argument so we let her have it. Next David found a cherryade can, followed by Wendy finding a plastic bag with Arabic writing on it all the way from Dubai. A little later, and with much excitement a KitKat wrapper was located on the other side of a fence. SallyAnn and David worked together to extract it and both claimed a sweet as their reward. In one area of woodland lots of empty cherryade cans were found and the sound of GoodGymmers calling out ‘cherry’ each time one was located reverberated around the trees. After an hour of 'wombling' we tied up our bin bags and left them by the roadside for collection. Munching on sweets we made our way back to the cafe in the park for a much deserved hot drink feeling good in the knowledge that we had removed five bags of plastic (including the star find of an elephant shaped toilet brush holder!) from the woods.

Giving the war memorial a ‘face-leaf-t’

Huddersfield Report written by Kati Law

The dip in the temperature this morning didn’t put off SallyAnn, Louise, David, Meg and as we met up with Paul from Friends of Greenhead Park to lend a hand getting the war memorial area of the park spruced up for Remembrance Day. In true GoodGym fashion we quickly got our brooms and headed across the park. Louise and SallyAnn tackled one set of steps, and while David, Meg, Paul and I swept the other. A special shout out goes to SallyAnn and Meg who had already volunteered at parkrun this morning. The conversation started with running injuries, which soon paled into insignificance as we remembered Huddersfield’s war dead, especially those who died in Afghanistan earlier this decade. After about an hour the steps were clear of fallen foliage and were much safer for our war veterans to walk up and down. Well done to Louise who completed her FIFTIETH good deed today and thank you to Paul for financing the hot drinks afterwards. We all owe you a coffee now!

Doing Good in Gledholt Wood

Huddersfield Report written by Kati Law

There was an autumnal nip in the air in Greenhead Park this morning but that didn’t stop five GoodGymmers getting out of bed and running 5k. A big thank you to Acre Street Runners for providing the volunteers at Huddersfield parkrun this morning and especially to Run Director, Richard Plunkett, who gave GoodGym a shout out in the run briefing. During the run GoodGymmers chatted about organ donation after two ladies gave moving speeches in the run briefing. Have you chatted to your loved ones recently about what you want to happen to your organs when you no longer need them? As my next of kin has recently changed my sister and I have just exchanged texts on the subject. That really is all it needs to save lives! After parkrun we wandered over to Gledholt Woods, also known locally as TP Woods. We met members of the Friends of Gledholt Woods who were busy putting up smart new signs telling us about the area. With a lot of excitement at the sight of litter we got stuck in to the task at hand. After a hour we had picked up ten bags of litter and the woods were looking a lot cleaner!
