Rosie and Sheila had an early evening session at the community allotment. The plants were all quite thirsty, so we gave them all a big drink whilst also filling up the water butts. The radishes have grown so much that and were popping out of the soil, calling out 'Eat me', so we both took some home for dinner. We moved a couple of planters containing courgettes into a lighter position and then moved on to weeding around the figs. Whilst there, we spotted that the first raspberries are beginning to ripen so we had to sample them, including some interesting golden ones.Just as we were about to leave, Rosie spotted some larvae on some fencing. Google lens identified them as Harlequin Ladybird larvae, but was unsure whether they are overall beneficial or not. We are hoping they will gobble up any aphids they find

The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
