Sara, Amy, Paul and Michelle volunteered as marshals at the first Covid-19 vaccination clinic in the area. It was a privilege to be involved in something that will make such a huge difference to people's lives over the next few months.
The people invited to be vaccinated first are the most vulnerable group, so most of them had been very isolated during the pandemic and it took some considerable physical effort for many of them to come to the clinic. We did our best to keep them safe and comfortable while they queued for their turn.
Sara volunteered on the first and second mornings and said, 'I felt so humbled to have met so many inspirational people today. It's heartwarming.' On the second morning she was joined by Amy, who was impressed with how Sara calmly checked people in on the computer and made them feel at ease even when the rain put her under pressure to get people in the door as quickly as possible.
Paul and Michelle volunteered on the third day (Christmas Eve). Michelle reported, 'there were 3 no shows from the 144 scheduled to get the vaccine at this morning's sessions....that's an amazing take-up from the over 80s in Maidenhead,' and no vaccines were wasted...'They call care home stall down for spares, its all very well managed, lots of headcounts as we got towards the end of the session'.
Paul summarised, 'Twas busy!...Really well run (by NHS WAM Social Prescribing Service) and a great bunch of people.'
We expect to have the opportunity to help again during January. Shifts won't be listed through GoodGym, so if you are interested in helping please contact Amy Lovell on amylovell@goodgym.org
