Every little bit of good helps
8 GoodGymers made their way to help their local community in Lewisham.
- Saturday, 19th of November 2016
On Saturday eight GoodGymmers joined some other volunteers from Fare Share to help sort some food in Deptford. Fare share is an amazing organisation that accepts unwanted food from supermarkets and distributes it to organisation such as school breakfast clubs, homeless shelters and recovery centres.
Once we'd had a health and safety briefing from Natalie and donned our steel-toe cap boots and fluorescent vests we got to work. Roni and Catherine made up Team Apples and were given the task of splitting up a huge donation of apples into 5kg crates. Emma got to work date-checking a large amount of breads, cakes and ketchup to see if any of it could still be used and the rest of us sorted some newly delivered food by type. It took a little while to get everything sorted and split into crates of the desired weight but it was satisfying work and we all felt much better informed about the Christmas range available in Tesco and exactly what was included in a breakfast burrito kit by the end of it. With those jobs done we spent the last few minutes getting orders ready to go out which was equally satisfying even though I didn't manage to find the elusive red velvet cake.
