A volunteer shift with food redistribution Charity City Harvest
Most of the evening was spent tackling an unusually large quantity of food that had arrived in a state unsuitable for redistribution. As well as bread, veg and ready meals that’s were either rotten, stale or past their ‘use by’ dates, there were also trays and trays of very mouldy peaches.
‘Peach triage’ involved going through the punnets in each tray and separating out the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The most severely mouldy went straight into the orange food bins , for conversion to biofuel. Those in a more stable condition but with evidence of mould or damage were rated up for pig food. Finally the walking wounded, very ripe but undamaged fruits, were re-packaged ready to be redistributed to organisations that feed the vulnerable.
