Raking it in on a Saturn-day Morning
5 GoodGymers made their way to help the York Greenways in York.
- Saturday, 3rd of February 2018
Five GoodGym Yorkies spent a rainy Saturday Morning sawing, scything, raking, digging and litter-picking near Saturn, on the York to Selby Cycle Route
It was back to Naburn Station today where they never run out of things for us to help with! Today's list of things to do were:
- Dig a hole to make a doggy compost loo
- Saw some big branches of some trees
- Scythe and rake an area at the side of the cycle path to give the wildflowers a chance to bloom
- Litter-pick, scythe and rake another section to make a picnic area which overlooks the marina
Ben was wearing his shiny new GoodGym t-shirt (welcome to the team!). He and Huw quickly got stuck into hole digging, only hampered slightly by Huw breaking the tool they were using. Meanwhile, Ellie and Leanne worked together on sawing. It wasn't long before Nikki arrived, fresh from a sub 23 minute parkrun and a 10k trot over to the mission. (She'd already covered 21km.) With the full team in place, we walked a short way down the path to start scything and raking. After a crash course and safety briefing from Leanne, Ben had his first ever go on a scythe while the rest of us raked and lopped. Leanne got attacked by burdock heads when clearing a particularly burdocky bit of the picnic area. Ellie thought they might not stick to her gardening gloves, so came over to help. Turns out they stick to everything.
After an hour of clearing, when we were cold enough that we couldn't feel our fingers anymore, we headed home, leaving everything looking much neater and more wildflower friendly.
