Shovels, wheelbarrows and loads of bags of soil

Earlier this evening, 28 runners turned up at York Hall and split into two groups, each still of quite a size. The two groups, led by Ivo and Rebecca, helped at different ends of the same task. The first group, led by Ivo, ran up Cambridge Heath Road, took a left at the canal and then headed north through London Fields. They arrived at their task and started straight away, digging up top-soil into bags and loading the bags into two waiting cars. To allow them to take shifts at the hard digging, the group split in half. The non-digging team kept their muscles warm by jogging a route through the local area. The cars that Ivo's team had loaded, drove south to Cordwainers Garden where Rebecca's unloaded them into the carpark (having already completed a hefty 4.7k route east from York Hall and round Victoria Park). The cars headed back north and the runners started the job of shifting the soil bags into the community garden. The team worked fast and managed a number of other jobs in the garden too. They shifted a large pile of tyres, filling a few with soil to be used as beds for sweet peas; bagged and moved well over a ton of compost; and complete a sizable patch of mowing - note the unpowered hand mower.Once their jobs were complete, the runners continued their run. Ivo's group ran south back down through London fields. The group that had done 2 extra loops had done 8.4k and the other group had done 6.2k. Rebecca's group went west to London Fields then Haggerston Park and back to York Hall along Bethnal Green Road. Kate, of Cordwainers Garden, said "They really are like a group of Supermen, look how much difference they can make".
