Another Sunday, and a visit to Stargarallot community gardens. It was a bit of a big task today as we had to move an entire raised bed to a new location, it had been originally planted up with the 3 Sisters Method
NO that's not the Powerpuff Girls
It's planting Corn, beans, and squash as companion planting.
Unfortunately, as we had to move the planter, it had to go. We rolled up our non-existent sleeves and dug right in, the plants were removed, and the wheelbarrows arrived as we started to dig the topsoil from the bed. The good soil from the top was being kept on tarpaulin so that we could put the soil back in the correct order.
Wait a minute, what was that......them...........ahhhhhhhhhhh
We disturbed two little mice that came bounding out of the undergrowth to find some new homes, and we named them Geraldine and Gerald. We continued to dig, but now like we were on an archaeological dig just in case there was more.
Break Time - grab some juice
After a quick break we got back to work, dismantling the bed and moving it over to the new plot - some slight digging required to level it off before screwing it all back together. Now was the return of the soil..........and stuff. We moved the twigs and old compostable material that had once been the mouse house 🐭, then a layer of cardboard before finally replacing the good soil from the tarpaulin.
It was a long day but full of chat and fun, a great workout worthy of a big dinner afterwards.
