Herons, Heineken and Heaps of Plastic

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

The usual duo of Adi and Paul picked litter in two parts of Lewisham - the former in Sydenham’s Mayow Park, the latter in Deptford’s Brookmill Park.

Paul found lots of plastic brought down by recent high flows on the Ravensbourne - around a couple of black bags full, a lot more than recent weeks. There was also an abandoned shopping trolley to report via Love Clean Streets.

There was other activity along the Ravensbourne too, the herons were nesting! This is several weeks earlier than last year.

Thank you! I’ll probably do an update on them most weeks until their young fledge. It’s an utter joy watching them as I pick litter.

It's so nice observing the wildlife and the changing seasons. A very mindful thing.

It really is! There is so much variety for an urban setting - what I see varies from week to week, on river levels and more broadly on the seasons. Whatever my mood is when I start, it is always better when I finish - it sets me up for the rest of the day.

Another Two Pronged Attack On Lewisham Litter

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

Adi and Paul partnered to pick Lewisham litter on dull, damp days. Adi was in Sydenham's Mayow Park, Paul in Deptford's Brookmill Park. In adddition to a black sack full of litter, Paul saw the early stages of courting rituals of both the herons and the Egyptian geese as wel, as a fleeting glimpse of a kingfisher.

Litter Picking in Rain and Sun

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

Adi was in Sydenham's Mayow Park on dull and soggy morning today, The weather meant that it didn’t take that long to get the park litter free though.

Paul had litter picked a day earlier in cold sun along the Ravensbourne in Deptford’s Brookmill Park, river levels were a bit lower this week so he was able to get to areas that have been inaccessible for a couple of week so more litter picked than for a few weeks. There was lots of wildlife including herons, a kingfisher, lots of mallards, and several foxes - including a friendly one asleep in the sun. He got some positive feedback from a member of the park Friends group.

Litter Picking & Alpaca Rescue

Lewisham Report written by Lewisham runner

It was the usual double pronged attack on Lewisham this weekend. Adi enjoyed some glorious sun and colours whilst doing good in Mayow Park in Sydenham.

Paul was a day earlier and had Friday’s drizzle and leaden skies in Deptford’s Brookmill Park. About a bag for life’s worth of litter was collected along the river with an alpaca, which was placed by the playground for rehoming.
