The task in a Bute of a community

Cardiff Report written by Michael

A good turnout tonight, especially considering that we changed our start day to Thursday for this task. Our first task with the wonderful new community centre for EYST supporting Ethinic Minority communities in Cardiff to provide vital support, resources and services to those who need it most.

We met at our usual start location of The Glassworks, where we split into our two groups.

  • Group 1 the walkie talkers, they were taking a more direct route of about 20 minutes walking.
  • Group 2 the joyful joggers, out on a longer distance to get up to that 5km total run (with both runs there and back).

Once both groups arrived, it was time to see this new task and meet the organiser.

Croeso Fateha

The original task was to clear the outside space for them, but this had already been completed by one of their eager volunteers. So instead, we were clearing some planters, sorting out their green waste bin and cutting back an overgrown large bush.

We had volunteers emptying the green bin into bags, it had been used for cardboard and plastic. Other volunteers were then filling the green bin with the green waste from the planters, leaving them ready to be planted up by the girls group in the community centre later on. And the final group were on the bush, chopping down the branches as much as possible.

It was soon time to leave, with some music playing on our running speaker. Hopefully we will be back soon for a painting task, so watch this space.

Join us next week, when we return to our usual Tuesday sessions for a pancake day run to Cwtch Together with optional eating afterwards...Sign Up required --------> HERE

What a Bute of a Street

Cardiff Report written by Michael

Our evening tonight was going to take place in Bute Street over Cardiff Bay, this part of Cardiff is steeped in glorious HISTORY and deserves a visit from the goodgymers.
And so, we made our way for a litterpick session. Walkers heading straight there on a shorter route, whilst Michael took the runners out for a 6km run (total there and back).
Plenty of time to catch up tonight, debating why bushes were cut the shapes they are - especially when they look like street urinals! A good 4 bags of rubbish, quite clean as the bags weren't full, a quick photo and then time to head back for some hot food.

Learning Time

  • Butetown was barren moorland until the late 1800s, when the 2nd Marquis of Bute decided to build the first dock in Cardiff.
  • The Coal Exchange was built in 1886 for leading businessmen, to meet to fix deals with countries all over the world.
  • In 1909, the first million-pound (£1,000,000) cheque was signed at the Exchange, and presented to the National Provincial Bank in Bute Street.
  • In 1937 Shirley Bassey was born at Adeline Street. By the time she was 20, Shirley was starring in shows in London, Paris, Monte Carlo and also sang three title songs for the 'Bond' films.
  • The Norwegian Church was built in 1868 for the Scandinavian community near the West Dock and has close associations with Roald Dahl (he was Christened there) and his family.

We will be returning this way for a new project in a couple of weeks time.

Bridgerton of rubbish

Cardiff Report written by Darren

In a dirty* episode of the Netflix series tonight, 12 Goodgym folks ran and walked to Adamsdown. * dirty as in rubbish btw!

(Be warned this is a mis-match of Bridge and Bridgerton puns, and I have never seen Bridgerton).

They split into two groups and quickly collected 6 bags of rubbish, which put the GG total for the day to 10 bags. Tantalizingly close to our 100 bag target for the month. Sign up on the relay sheet and collect a bag before the month is out if you can! Please!!

Take me to the Bridge - some of the group headed off to collect rubbish from a particularly mucky bridge that Imy and Martin had spotted en route to the meeting point.

Simon and Garfunkel could not make it but this really was a Bridge over troubled waste and several bags were quickly filled with the usual litter items as well as some discarded clothing - probably flung off prior to a steamy scene on set!

The other group collected rubbish from around the school and nearby playground. There was nothing novel about this task, although we did collect some pulp fiction at one point. Some passers by of the polite society did thank us for carrying out our work with such nobility. We collected lots of chocolate and sweet wrappers but sadly no Viscount ones!

We won't win any Emmy awards for our work but we enjoyed it and have done some more good in the Community.
