A very down to earth task

Cardiff Report written by Benjamin Annear

37 runners ran 15 km to help the Down to Earth social enterprise in Gower.

08:40 and we gathered by the flag, a mix of goodgym runners and some who were new to goodgym - a special welcome to you! After a vigorous warm-up of pirate- and lovetrails-themed games, we set off to the Down to Earth project - a social enterprise that helps people to bring about positive change in their lives through meaningful outdoor activity.

On the way there, we stopped at Arthur's Stone for a dramatic reenactment of the Lion King and to take some photos of the stunning scenery. We soon had to stop again due to horses on the path. Many of them had foals, which were really sweet, but made us nervous about going too near them. Eventually the horses moved on allowing us past and we arrived at Down to Earth.

Once there we were welcomed with squash and biscuits and given a little introduction to the work Down to Earth does. They aim to make a positive difference in people's lives through sustainable construction, outdoor adventures and merging innovation in healthcare delivery with innovation in education. Inside the building were plaques made by groups of young people about their experiences at Down to Earth - it was moving to read about the incredible positive changes these young people had achieved through their engagement with the project. We split into four groups and were tasked with gardening, sawing, sorting timber and moving parts of houses. It was hard work in the hot sun, but many hands made light of it and we achieved an incredible amount working together. After a group photo outside the main building, we were off back to the festival.

We took a different route back, pausing on top of a hill for another great view of beautiful Gower. Ben stood on the trig point valiantly fighting off territorial wasps whilst taking photos of the group. The run back was fun, lots of down hill and some lovely shady woodland. We arrived back at the festival in time for a hearty lunch and having made new friends and done some good.

GoodGym gets Green Fingered

Bristol Report written by Shona Buchanan

It was a big old night at GoodGym Bristol with...

Fifty-nine runners Twelve new GoodGymers and Three tasks

Phwoar. Welcome to everyone who was running with us for the first time tonight - it was great to meet you all. And a big well done to Roz who completed her 50th Good Deed tonight and will be sporting her black t-shirt soon!

Our massive group got to work on three different tasks tonight...

Task 1: The planters

Maria led a select group of 6 runners to The Station where Alice D set them to work painting the planters a beautiful green to continue the spruce up of the area. We gave the benches at The Station their first lick of paint a month ago and so it was great to be able to help Alice and the team with continuing the paint job to prep for the summer.

Task 2: Setting the tone

Meanwhile, Alice W took a group to Emmaus, the homeless charity. Due to an Open Warehouse event they are having at the start of June and some very efficient volunteers over the past few days, our planned warehouse sorting was changed to leafleting for the warehouse open day. Matt was in his element with changing toners and guillotines, the rest of the group got through distributing hundreds of leaflets, and Alice managed to innocently ask two members of the group...

So are you two screwing then?

(Nails, we think).

Task 3: De-railing the night

The rest of us went to St Paul's Church to meet Ed from the Churches Conservation Trust. Our task here had been cancelled last month due to rain so we were delighted to have a positively balmy day to get to work this time. After Ed explained a bit about the trust and the importance of Circomedia, we started sanding and repainting the railings at the front of the church. The massive team sanded almost the whole front of the church and gave one of the gates and its surrounding panelling a fresh lick of (you guessed it) green paint. Before long, time was up and we ran on our way promising Ed we would come back to finish off soon.

Eating Peters

After reconvening back at base, we had a quick game of Squat Tig to finish off the night and then debated (if 1 v. everyone else counts as a debate) the pronunciation of Pitta until it was time to say goodnight.

CREDIT TO ALICE D FOR THE PUN!

Respect your Elders

Bristol Report written by Paul Becker (he/him)

Welcome today to new runners Kate and Bella who accompanied us along the Malago Greenway to meet Martin and his MVCG companions down at the secret orchard.

Once there, they joined a group tasked with planting some wildflower bulbs being sure to distribute them in a 'casual just as nature might have done' manner.

Most others worked to cut back any new brambles and make sure they can't get re-established while Chris and Patrick did some excellent lumberjack work on a couple of unruly elders.

Great to be back in the orchard and looking forward to many more visits in 2019! Thanks to Dave for the pun.

"Unruly elders"? I would like to make it clear that no rambunctious octogenarians were harmed during this run :-)

Ha - possibly could have done with a capital E, but thanks for the clarification, Patrick!
