Making Hard Graft look like Child's Play

Hackney Report written by anne malcolm

This was GoodGym's first time helping out at the Shakespeare Walk Adventure Playground and we had a glorious sunny morning for it.

On arrival, we were offered a range of tasks. Jo and Anne chose to rake sand in the climbing area to even out the ground level.

Meanwhile Matt, Gayle and Jack headed off to the wood pile to shift logs to another area where they can be cut up with the chainsaw without annoying the neighbours.

The hour passed in no time at all, in which time, a mountain of logs had been shifted and the sand was definitely more stripey, if not necessarily more evenly spread.

Sounds like there is plenty to do for this group so look out for more tasks here in future.

Dodging Balls at Hackney Beach

Hackney Report written by Dan (He/ him)

Well done everyone on another good task helping Springfield Park!

Me, George and Caitlin met outside Brunswick Bakehouse for a nice social run through parks and along the river Lea to the task. There we met up with the rest of the team, welcome new Goodgymer Paula !

We grabbed the tools from the depot and made our way to the work in progress Wildflower Strip next to the tennis courts in Spring Hill.

We surveyed the area and focused on patch which we were able to complete in the allocated time. We raked/ hoed the grass, whilst dodging tennis balls! We then spread sand over the area to help with reducing the grass burden, and dropping the fertility of the ground which will help to establish a healthy wildflower strip that will be more likely to survive long term. Wildflower strips are a great source of food for pollinators, and great for bigger mammals like hedgehogs who will hunt in them.

Before we knew it we created our own little Beach / Dry Garden in Hackney.

Great job everyone, see you at the next one!

Who You Gonna Call?

Hackney Report written by Dan (He/ him)

9 Goodgymers turned up on this Saturday morning at Springfield Park to help finish painting a shelter. Some of us met for our group run outside Brunswick Bakehouse and did a nice 3k scenic run through Hackney Downs Park, Millfields Park and then along the Lea Valley. Welcome Charlotte for her first GoodGym Session!

After we got suited up in our boiler suits looking like Ghostbusters, we then painted the Shelter, after no time it was looking as good as new! Great job everyone! We will we back to help Springfield Park create habitat environments.

Come along to our next group run on Thursday to help move some couches for the older and disabled patients at St Leonard's Hospital. Or next Saturday we are back to help out at The Robin Hood Community Garden.

Po โ€“ ta โ€“ toes and weeding, fair play!

Hackney Report written by Dan (He/ him)

Four GoodGymers joined together this Saturday morning for a group run to help out Homerton Adventure Playground.

We did a quick warm up and then set off from outside Brunswick Bakehouse for a social 2k run to Homerton Adventure Playground.

Two tasks were set before us and we split up into two small teams to divide and conquer. Jack and Suze tackled a heavily weeded area along the edge of the playground (which was so overgrown it was covering some artwork).

Marek and myself got rid of weeds and turned over a vegetable patch, unearthing some potatoes along the way which we collected.

We all joined at the end to help clear some final weeds before our potato-holding group photo and run back to Hackney Downs.

Well done all! The Adventure Playground contact was impressed with what a difference we made, and we shall be back for future tasks.

Robin Hood Gardens and the merry Goodgymmers ๐Ÿน

Hackney Report written by Dan (He/ him)

7 Goodgymmers helped out the Robin Hood Community Garden on this Sunday morning. Welcome new Goodgymmer Jonathan, and all others returning for this task which made a big difference for this community garden oasis.

We swapped around between these physical jobs which included moving rubble from a derelict site to help construct a habitat. Collecting branches and logs to weave into a dead hedge and turning over a compost heap which Jack and Victoria blitzed!

Peter the garden contact was so delighted with our help and we will be back for more tasks. Some of us departed with apples from the orchard and popped to the pub for a well earned drink. ๐Ÿป

Join us for our group run next week to help out local charity Homerton Adventure Playground: https://www.goodgym.org/v3/sessions/helping-out-at-homerton-adventure-playground
