Sorting the Veg

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Edward Stewart Waller

We were set tasks which were accomplished in the Nursery. We were introduced to the staff who were helpful and happy at work. There were two of us this time, putting plants into large black trays to be filled with water. Last task, we deadheading.

We finished at 11.30am, and then walked home. Just very glad to have helped and enjoy the atmosphere.

Dead heading - the blooming end for flowers

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Karen Meade

Laura and Karen spent a very pleasant morning at Braywick Heath Nursery. They started off putting the rather overgrown pots of vegetables into trays to make them easier to look after. Once the vegetables had been tamed they moved outside to dead head the flowers in the sun.

The last of the 6-packs

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Laura, Karen and Sheila helped out at Braywick Plant Nurseries, potting up plug plants. It's nearing the end of this job for this season and the greenhouses are looking very full of plants ready to sell. We had the honour of potting up the last of the plants to go into 6-packs (Pelargoniums and Petunias), but also impatiens and lavender. Well done on speedy potting up, and the nursery, as ever, we're grateful for our help

Plugging the Gap

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Goodgym continues to support Braywick Plant Nurseries in planting up thousands of plug plants, ready for growing on ready for sale. Today it was 4 different colours of Lobelia followed by some Petunias. We kept the staff busy topping up the compost and taking the plants away so we could fill up the trays again. It was so satisfying seeing the fruits of our labours all laid out in the greenhouse. A great team effort

Sunbelievable!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

4 Goodgymers responded to a request for an extra session at Braywick Plant Nurseries. They have received dozens of trays of plug plants that all need potting up so they can grow ready for sale. Regulars Laura and Sheila were joined by Kate for her second session there and Claire, who was inspired by Gardeners World to return to Goodgym and do something practical with plants. The four of us had a great production line going, potting up Heuchera, Salvia, Delphinium, Lavender, Rudbeckia, Nepeta and a Sunflower variety called Sunbelievable Brown Eyed Girl- thanks for the great report title! Hundreds of pots later, we had filled all the trolleys and bench space and had all loved such a productive and chatty morning.

Odd Jobs

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Didem, Laura and Sheila welcomed Kate to her first session at Braywick Plant Nursery. We had lots of odd jobs to do. Firstly we moved some grasses from the outside area at the front to the sales area at the back and replaced them with pots of herbs that they are wanting to sell off We then moved on to transplanting some of the viola six-packs to ensure that each had their full complement of 6 plants. While Didem and Kate continued this job, Laura and Sheila got distracted by sorting the pre-printed plant labels so they can be used again. Re-using the labels can potentially save the nursery hundreds of pounds, as well as save on plastic waste,so is worth doing even though it's quite a time-consuming job!

So many sizes of pots!

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

For the first session of the year at Braywick Plant Nurseries we were asked to help sort a whole load of donated pots from under some benching. This is part of a larger reorganisation project, and will allow the benching to be moved into its new position. The nursery likes to re-use as many pots as possible, but we had to remove any that were broken, too small or had the names of plants or other nurseries printed on them. The remainder were sorted into stacks of similar sizes and stored in a large wooden crate. There are so many different pot dimensions, and we were all a bit goggle-eyed by the end! But we cleared a large area, enabling the good works to continue. It was great to see Christine back for her second session, and to catch-up with Viv and Laura

Potting and trimming

Windsor and Maidenhead Report written by Windsor and Maidenhead runner

Laura and Sheila welcomed Didem to her first mission at Braywick Plant Nursery on a chilly morning. Our warm-up task was to repot some Festuca grasses into larger pots, to allow them to continue to grow over the winter. We then moved on to removing any dead stems and leaves from the Pelargonium and Impatiens plants which are over-wintering in the glasshouse. One large pot of trimmings and a few cold toes later, we made our way home
