Attack of the Rhizomes!
2 GoodGymers made their way to help an isolated older person in York.
- Sunday, 13th of May 2018
As we knew the mission was going to involve removing ground elder, I'd already done a bit of research about how to get rid of it. It's a weed that spreads through rhizomes (underground stems) so you need to dig quite deep to make sure you get every last bit.
Mrs E had a good selection of garden tools ready for us when we arrived. We began to tackle the corner of the garden where the weed had taken over while she put the kettle on.
As we started digging, we discovered that the ground elder had been providing shelter to a lot of snails. Some of them expressed an interest in joining GoodGym, but didn't think they'd be able to run for 15 minutes without stopping. We probably won't be seeing them on a group run any time soon.
An hour and half later, the ground elder was all gone and Mrs E was very happy to be able to see her rhubarb again. She gave us a lovely thank you note and we were on our way.
