Movie Magic

Monday 13th October

Written by Janet Beauchamp

Nine Goodgymers attended the monthly care home quiz. Well done to Eleanor for putting the gym into Goodgym by running all the way there and back! It was lovely to receive such a warm welcome from the residents now that it’s turning darker and chillier outside. This month Janet took on the role of quiz master, starting with a picture round of old movie posters from the 1930s and 1940s. This caused much discussion among the three teams, with renditions of Judy Garland hits being heard across the room! Unfortunately, our lovely 100 year old resident couldn’t quite remember where Judy Garland’s train was going (St.Louis) so the film title evaded her. There were science and nature, geography and general knowledge rounds, with a few trick questions thrown in. Did you know that Albert Einstein’s wife was an Einstein even before she got married? Turns out, only one of our teams did (or they made a lucky guess)! And the Waikato River may sound Japanese but is, in fact, the longest river in New Zealand. Congratulations to the Middlemarchers with a phenomenal total of 41 out of 46. There was only a point in it for the two runners-up teams. Well done everyone!

The Winners took the biscuit!

Monday 9th June

Written by Caprice McWilliams

It was time once again for GoodGym’s monthly quiz night at Abbeyfield Wessex—and what a fantastic evening it was! Janet and Keith joined our favourite ladies, The Loose Women. A big warm welcome also goes to Tony, a new resident at Abbeyfield, and to Lea and Daryl, who joined forces with Team The Winners. Caprice stepped up as quizmaster for the evening, and she didn’t go easy on the teams! The quiz featured four lively rounds. We kicked things off with a tasty challenge: Name That Chocolatey British Biscuit. Next came an egg-themed round that cracked a few smiles. Then Caprice really turned up the heat with a round of eight tricky puzzles that had everyone scratching their heads. The night wrapped up with a good old-fashioned general knowledge round. Both teams were brilliant, and it was a tight contest! The Loose Women scored a very respectable 27 points, but it was The Winners who lived up to their name, finishing with an impressive 31 points. It was another great evening filled with fun, laughter, and lovely company. The GoodGymers will be back on Monday, 2nd July, for more quiz-filled fun—this time with Daryl stepping in as quizmaster. We hope to see you there!

Float of knowledge

Monday 12th May

Written by Caprice McWilliams

Tonight’s session was all about quizzing fun at Abbeyfield Wessex! This time, Paul and Mohammed joined The Loose Women, while Eleanor sided with The Motley Crew. Caprice took the reins as quizmaster for the evening.

The quiz featured five lively rounds, including a nostalgic "Name That Gameshow Theme Tune" and a playful "Sink or Float" round. Caprice kicked things off by handing out random household objects, prompting the teams to guess whether each item would sink or float. At the end of the round, she tested each object in water—one point awarded for every correct guess!

Both teams brought their A-game in a very close match. The Loose Women scored an impressive 36 points, but it was The Motley Crew who edged ahead to victory with 39 points!

A great evening filled with laughs, teamwork, and a little friendly rivalry. Who knows what next month’s challenge will bring?

The GoodGymers will return on Monday 9th June for more quizzness—we hope to see you there!

Aeroplane And Simple

Monday 14th April

Written by Caprice McWilliams

It's that time again, quiz time!! This week the group split into two teams with Caprice being Quiz Master. Four rounds consisting of Geography, Science & Nature, The Arts and General Knowledge. Tonight's session started with Caprice asking each person to make a paper aeroplane. After a test flight the team were to choose and plane and nominate a team member to fly it. The furthest plane would score the team five points. After some tricky rounds The Loose Women nominated Daryl to fly their plane and the other team nominated Sophie to fly their plane. Both planes were impressive but The Loose Women's plane won as it made it halfway across the room. They took the lead with 35/45 with the other team scoring 29/45. A very close score indeed! Well done to everyone involved, it was lots of fun this evening. What will Caprice make them do next month? Someone mentioned who could make the best hat? We will join the Abbeyfield residents next month Monday 12th May.
