Hedging our bets

Saturday 8th February

Written by Judy Knapp

Val and I joined the regular monthly workparty at Nore Barn Woods for a good physical workout.

Val was squelching in mud, laying a new stretch of log path.

I joined the group weaving a beautiful dead hedge from hazel coppicing.

We were both so busy, we didn't remember to do a selfie until we were in the pub afterwards for our well-deserved lunch!

Rakes, trees & leaves

Saturday 11th January

Written by Judy Knapp

It was great to be joined by Lucy at Nore Barn Woods, along with all the regular Friends group. It was a glorious morning, with blazing sunshine and crisp, icy footpaths.

The group undertook tree planting along the edge of the Woods, some bramble clearance and lots of raking up leaves from one of the woodland glades, with numerous wheelbarrow trips to the compost piles.

As always, there was plenty of banter, amusing anecdotes and sharing of wildlife knowledge.

Rake it in!

Friday 13th December 2024

Written by Judy Knapp

Well done, William for his second GoodGym task; for running part of the way; and for wearing shorts in December!

We joined the call for the Xmas session with the Friends of Nore Barn Woods, after Storm Darrugh had interrupted the plans last weekend.

A strong band of volunteers raked piles and piles of leaves along the Wainwright's Way, with Val doing an amazing job collecting them in the wheelbarrow and taking them to the compost pile.

Roy explained the history of this Coffin Path, and the conservation reasons for leaf-raking.

And we were rewarded with mulled wine and mince pies after the hearty exercise.

Slash but no burn!

Saturday 9th November 2024

Written by Judy Knapp

Abby and Val joined the FONBW to clear two more glades in the wood. Armed with sickle and shears, we hacked our way through the bramble to make new 'well hidden' paths.

A lovely morning, working with a friendly group of folks.

Bramble bashing!

Saturday 12th October 2024

Written by Abby (she/her)

We joined our friends, the friends of nore barn woods for their monthly Saturday work morning helping to keep the woods healthy and tidy for the wildlife and the public.

As usual Roy had many tasks to dish out. Firstly clearing one of the glades ready for the bluebells to come up next year then moving onto the paths!

Val discovered her new favourite tool the grass basher / dodgy golf club and I tackled some of the tall brambles. Judy was chief rake, clearing all our mess / the destruction we left behind! Another great morning with the friends.
