SESSION ORGANISER
Find out about GoodGym TaskForce
Report written by Jess Smith
5 Goodgymmers met on another lovely summers evening to help out at the Maidenhead Community Allotment.
It is always a treat to return to the site of Maidenhead and Windsor Goodgym's first ever community mission, and tonight was no exception. There was a list of mini tasks to get stuck into so to get cracking everyone picked a number and were allocated the associated task!
Hannah got the whiffy job of filling the new raised bed with horse manure and then mixing in some top soil to make it ready for more plants to go into the amazing space.
Ange 's tasks was to empty the new water butt, move it to its new location at the back of the shed and then set up the hose to fill the water butt up!
Jess was gifted the awkward task of covering the new wooden frame over one the raised beds with netting to stop the birds getting to the lettuce. Ange also came to help whilst the butt was filling. It was fiddly task as the netting had to be secured to the frame with wool to stop it from coming loose.
Nicola took on the weeding of the areas around the fruit bushes (planted by Goodgym on a previous task), there were lots to be cleared and she ended up with a mountain of weeds to be added to the compost heap. Georgetta also got in on this act and helped give the bushes some space to breathe.
Before helping with the weeding Georgetta fixed some wood edging along the side of the long bed, she did an excellent job and it looks really smart!
Finally a trip to the allotment would not be complete with a bit of watering, with the dry weather it was important to give them a little drink, and hopefully some rain over the next few days will help too.
All the runners were impressed with the changes and the progress at the allotment and agreed it was always a pleasure to help out here. Look out for more tasks at this location!
Special mention also goes to Nicola as this was her 10th Good Deed! Yay!!!
The Maidenhead Community Allotment is run by a group of volunteers, who grow food to share with local residents, the users of the Boyn Grove Community and Resource Centre and Maidenhead Foodshare. They work with Men in Sheds, who are based on the same site. Men in Sheds is an initiative to combat loneliness by providing a space for men to connect and chat over practical tasks.
