Taking it Mon-day at a time

Monday 24th November

Written by Anastasia Hancock (she/her)

One Monday night, two great runnings communities and three impactful tasks - what better way to kick off the week?

Last night we had the first - but definitely not the last - collab between the fabulous Monday Night Mood Booster run club and GoodGym. With so many smiles and plenty of good vibes right from the off, it was clear it was going to be a great match.

While here at GoodGym we get fit by doing good, the lovely people at the Monday Night Mood Booster run club start the week with an inclusive run around Hyde Park where people connect over a shared love of running. Join the MNMB crew every Monday and then make it a double header by coming along to GoodGym Westminster every Tuesday evening - you'll be buzzing until Friday!

We kicked off the night with some warm ups in a beautifully festive Hyde Park with MNMB's traditional celebration of the past week's achievement. Huge congratulations to Sophia for smashing a new sub one hour PB at the Nike 10km and to Steven and Simon for an amazing run at the New York marathon (complete with a photo job around the route and beers before the finish line - very impressive!).

With MNMB's run ambassadors leading the way, we ran down to St Andrew's youth club. This amazing community hub is the oldest of its kind in the world. It offers young people in the borough incredible experiences and resources, such as music, dancing, martial arts, healthy food classes, residential trips and access to the arts. It is run by Adrian, who greeted us - fresh from the House of Lords - to give us a run down of the three tasks he needed us to complete.

The first job was to tackle the very full garage, creating more space and keeping it organised for the kids. While this got underway, the second group were upstairs to take on the table challenge. Several extremely heavy tables had to be shifted and built which took not only muscle but some strategic thinking. There were some very impressive Ikea skills on display!

Meanwhile the third team were downstairs in the gym sorting out a cupboard brimming with sports gear, including some of the heaviest medicine balls we've ever seen (check out the photos to see who managed a very respectable strongman style lift!)

After 45 minutes of hard work the garage was neat and tidy, the tables were built and put away, and all the sports gear in the cupboard had been carefully organised. It was amazing to see just how much could be done with everybody working together. Great job everyone!

If that wasn't enough of a workout we just had time to take on a couple of challenges which tested our lower body and abs. First was the progressive squat hold minute before we finished with a core triathlon - it was great to see excellent form from everybody despite the groans!

Thanks so much for all the positivity, hard work and the fun and welcoming atmosphere. Special shout out the brilliant Charlie and Marcus for making it happen. It was great to team up and enjoy a Monday night full of good moods and good deeds!

Thanks to Simon for capturing photos of the night, you can check out the gallery here

The Mystery of the Missing Day.

Thursday 20th November

Written by Nick Moore

Ms D was surprised when I rang her doorbell this morning...which confused me too. After she'd let me in, I discovered she was a bit flustered as she thought I was coming tomorrow - I assured her it was today (as per usual), and that it was Thursday...at which point the penny dropped - she'd somehow lost a day this week as a result of a few visitors, and changes to the usual weekly routine.

With that resolved, she then dictated today's list, although we did have to refer back to last week's just to check there was nothing missing. Fortunately, after a quick diversion to Boots to pick up some magic hair potion, the shopping proved straightforward and when I returned Ms D seemed a little more her usual self.

Previously...

Friday 21st November

The regular weekly shop for Mrs S had undergone a bit of a hiatus these past few weeks as she found herself under the care of the NHS for a while, but she's now back home and fighting fit, and it was great to catch up after the unexpected break in proceedings. This time the list was already neatly written out, and after a quick run through to double check the details, it was off out into the chilly morning to the familiar aisles of the world's politest supermarket.

The detailed list proved a winner, leaving me in no doubt on any of the items, all of which were on the shelves, and I was soon back (a little warmer for the walk) with treasure in hand for which Mrs S was her usual very grateful self.

Day of the Trofasts...

Saturday 22nd November

Written by Nick Moore

It was an IKEA pick and mix at Ms H's today - she's only just moved into her new flat, and has received a bulk delivery of many brown boxes containing all the parts for some wardrobes and storage units that had formed a small mountain in her living room.

The challenge was trying to determine what was in each box (without opening them up), made more difficult by Ms H also wanting a couple of the wardrobes upstairs - so it would make sense to take the parts for these nearer to their final destination, if only you knew which boxes to take.

After a bit of a chat with Ms H on how best to tackle the challenge, I just decided to begin somewhere...with something manageable.

I opened a box containing a Trofast storage unit - fortunately this seemed self contained, and Ms H showed me the separate baskets (that fit inside the unit) in a stack elsewhere...and got to work. I'd counted four brown boxes of Trofasts, so with the benefit of the learning curve, by number four I'd pretty much got the construction sequence mastered, although by now I had IKEA thumb from turning the Allen key so many times.

The clock had struck midnight (metaphorically...although it was very dark outside) at this point, so I showed Ms H what I'd managed to do, did a tidy up of the various other boxes, and assured her that we would arrange a return visit to try and conquer the rest next week...at least we've made it out of base camp.
